COMMENT ON THE SEX ARTICLE/S ON ON-SAMUI.COM
FROM THE NEEDLE
I am in the middle of the sex essay (what else) and having quite some fun.
A few things so far I'd like to add, in case you care at all about my blurb.
History: in the last century Polygamy was not only legal but commonly practiced throughout the country. It is fruitless to discuss the moral implications of one man having several wives and treating them as things to own rather than persons.
But the practical side of it was the women had been taken care of financially; meaning they had food, shelter and their kids have been taken care of, there was not much love or romance in this life, but at least it was a life.
As far as I know King Chulalongkorn ended all this, trying to transfer European lifestyle and customs to Siam. (Mind you he was also responsible for Thai women wearing neat closed up dresses, check out old drawings to see how little they wore before, as well as growing long hair, something that is considered typically Thai today, while the Farangs run around with Tomboy cuts.)
So suddenly every man was allowed only one wife, but who cared?
Right, nothing changed except now the seconds and thirds, not being allowed to share the same roof, where on their own, no protection, no safety, consequently they had to receive financial support before or during the whatever relation, something that could be called prostitution, I would call it rather survival.
Presence: Thai culture has some strange moral/social views on being a decent person.
You are right about the fact that they think of sex as a natural and good thing, but they think different about who's having when.
The facts:
It is, still throughout most of the country, absolutely indecent to have sex
before marriage (for females that is)
If you are male you should have some sexual experience with women before
marriage.
If you are a woman you should be a virgin when married.
If a boy seduces a girl, with false promises of marriage, he is a stud.
If a girl let a boy seduce her believing his false promises she is a slut.
A young girl cannot get any medical protection to prevent pregnancy without consent of their parents, couldn't even afford it anyway, naturally being brought up to be obedient to males she can't force the guy to wear a condom either.
If she gets pregnant she is considered not worthy anymore, society will look
down on her, it will be very difficult to find another partner.
She believes herself not being worthy but being a bad person, she couldn't
make the guy stay with her, could she?
Now being a bad person already, there's not much more to loose, but still a
kid to feed.
Therefore prostitution is the only option and they even feel they deserve
it.
Conclusion:
If you want to reduce prostitution in Thailand you simply have to allow
people to have protected sex before marriage.
Simply, I doubt it, even the more educated kids are opening up and loosening their parental ties, the upcountry people, with their hard, poor life will find it very difficult to chang quickly in their moral values, especially when it is so convenient for the male half of the population
Hope you find this interesting, give me a note.
